Standardized Tests
If possible, please submit one of the following:
-- The SAT I exam administered on or after March 12, 2005
-- The ACT (American College Testing assessment);
-- Or, three exams in different areas of study which must include a writing test, a quantitative test, and a test of the student's choice.
Tests may be selected from the SAT II, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams. Students may submit exams which are all of one type (e.g. three SAT II's, three A.P.'s or three I.B.'s) or may combine tests of different types (e.g. two SAT II's and one A.P.).
The following tests satisfy the writing and quantitative requirements:
-- Writing: SAT II Writing, A.P. English Language and Composition, I.B. English Language (A1, A2, or B)
-- Quantitative: SAT II Chemistry, Math or Physics, A.P. Computer Science, Chemistry, Economics, Math, Statistics, or Physics, I.B. Chemistry, Computing Studies, Economics, Math, Physics or Physical and Chemical Systems
PLEASE NOTE that the SAT I math exam will not satisfy the quantitative testing requirement, and the SAT I verbal exam will not satisfy the writing requirement.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Middlebury will consider either the TOEFL or the results from other standardized assessments, including the SAT I Verbal, SAT II Writing, ACT, IELTS, CPE, MELAB, and ELPT. Predicted grades in IBA1 or A2 English or in A-level English will also be considered. No minimum "cut-off" scores are used.
The average TOEFL scores for an entering class are 274, computer based, and 631, paper based.
Although the SAT I is not required, many applicants take it. The middle 50 percent of matriculants score 1370-1490 combined. The middle 50 percent of the matriculants who take the ACT score 29-32.
