UNITED WORLD COLLEGES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
VIETNAM COMPETITION 2009
The United World Colleges National Committee of Vietnam (UWC Vietnam) has the honour to announce the launch of the Vietnam Competition 2009 of the United World Colleges Scholarship Program. This scholarship program is for grade 11 students to gain an International Baccalaureate degree at one of the United World Colleges in the world. Full scholarships cover tuition, room and boarding for two years at school. Otherwise indicated, full scholarships do not include travel, pocket money and medical insurance.
Scholarships and placements available for the Vietnam Competition 2009:
Full scholarships
1. Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Canada
2. Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong
3. Mahindra United World College of India
4. Red Cross Nordic United World College, Norway
5. United World College of South East Asia, Singapore
(Travel and pocket money included.)
6. Armand Hammer United World College, USA
(Pocket money included. Student must pay 800 US$ for insurance.)
Placement without funding
7. United World College of the Atlantic, United Kingdom
(Student pays 100% of the full fees, i.e. 21,000 GBP in year 1 and 23,000 GBP in year 2.)
Requirements
1. General requirements: Applicants to this scholarship program must be:
• Vietnamese citizens and currently living in Vietnam
• Currently in Grade 11 and born between January 1992 and June 1993.
2. Program requirements: Successful applicants should demonstrate the following qualities:
• Academic strengths which indicate a strong likelihood of success in the IB program.
• The ability to communicate in English.
• The ability to be a good Ambassador for Vietnam in the environment of a UWC.
• The willingness and the ability to befriend and learn from people whose ideas, beliefs and cultural backgrounds may be very different from their own.
• The ability to gain the most from the opportunity and to contribute to the college life. Relevant qualities include, but not limit to, commitment to service, openness of mind, enthusiasm, balance, good humour, the ability to thrive in a foreign environment, emotional strength, and physical fitness.
• An active contributor to the life of their school and/or wider community.
• Involvement in cultural, artistic or sporting activities.
3. Preference
Other things being equal, preference will be given to a student who would not otherwise have access to such an experience or who would gain the most from the opportunity. Therefore, students from rural and remote areas and students from disadvantage background are encouraged to apply for this program.
Selection Process
Qualified candidates must send their completed applications to UWC Vietnam before Friday, March 27, 2009.
A number of applicants will be invited for group and individual interviews in Hanoi. Interviewees from other cities and provinces are expected to pay for their own travel costs but can stay at UWC families in Hanoi if needed. Selected applicants will be informed in April 2009 and will come to study at the Colleges in August 2009.
