Topic #1 - Changing your life!

oh u dont have to take part in every of ur host activities....just tell them that u have work to do..dont hesitate

To Thảo: It's so great that your host family's nice. What do you they often do during weekend? Is it fun?
To D. Hương: In your school, at weekend, besides music performance, is there anything else exciting that you can do?
Oh, the weekend is coming!...

we have mall trip , movie trip every Saturday, bke trip every Sunday. Last week, we went to Boston, so nice!
All other activities depend on which club you join.
To Thao, to stay with host is much better than dorm, I think. DORM is so boring! You can't stay up late coz 11pm is light out... so many customs!
DH

REally,
My hót cousin stays in dorm in university. And what she says is" IT is so wonderful. The boys and girls stay in the same building and there are not many rules so it really offers a lot of fun.
I have refused some but not all( it is horrible to do that).

If boys and girls stay in the same building, definitely it's a lot of fun. Here in my school the dorms of boys and girls are separated. But I'm more fortunate than DH because we don't have light out. But hey, what about weekdays? If you have to stay up late to study, can you?

We also have mall trip, movie trip, dinner trip etc. but I mean is there something fun that the whole school may take part in?

There are lots of customs in our school:
if you want to stay up late to study, you have to ask for a late light at 10pm
At 10.30, you have to check in or you will get a demerit
Every time you go to the Dining hall for dinner, you also have to check in or again a demerit.
Everyday you have to wear dress code. At lunch, we have to sit at certain tables in a so-called "family style" with a faculty. Then in turn, seniors, juniors.. can stand up to take the food.
There are about 15 dorms in our school. Boys and girls are off course seperated. You are not allowed to go the boys'dorm, sure! ;)
On tuesday, we have formal dinners!
On Saturday, this is Suffield-spirit day. We wear clothes with the name of the school on them. My school has about 25 kinds of coats, socks, pants, chinos, shirts, bags with the name of the school But they are all so expensive, gees! This school is so good at running business!
We also have all the school things that have the name of the school.
There are still tens of customs here.
To Diep: there are games every weekend. You can go see but I hardly go there.

Hey, do you have a work program in your schools?
here, I am a kitchen helper. You are not paid anything, this is mandatory. If you are absent at work, you get a demerit! Luckily, I am a very hard-working kitchen helper!

2 semesters at a prestigious boarding school for a job in a kitchen ain't a bad deal at all!!

We have dorm jobs. Every morning, before breakfast, we have to clean our dorm. Then we also have morning meetings where people (faculty and students) announce important events. A talk is also given every Monday morning.
My school has work program, too. It's called work job. I do work job in the computer lab.
Community service is also required: minimum 5 hours a semester. Peer tutoring is also counted as community service. I tutor Precalc.

Here in my school, we don't have dress code. We wear casual clother everyday. My Calc teacher suggested dressing up on Thursday, so he can take off his suit at the end of the day and feel good. (Some offices allow people to wear casual clothes on Fri only).
Girls can go to boys' dorms but only in the common room.
If we do something wrong: late for class, sports, work jobs... we get a cut, then more serious faults or 3 cuts: a violation. Students who receive a vio must work during weekend.

So complicated. We can sit wherever and with whomever. How is that "family style"? Is it fun?

Trời! Sao nghe như đi tu dzậy? Em Diệp chắc đã ngoan lắm rồi vào đây thành em sơ luôn. Do they teach martial art also? Go tell them they should change the school's name to Shaolin Temple or somethin.

:D  :D  :D
But I think my school is much less strict than Dieu Huong's. I'm not so "ngoan" as you think! And in fact, whether we receive a vio or not depends much on each teacher. Some are very nice. Even if we're late for a class 3 times, we won't receive a vio.
Do you have "light out" in your dorm, Dũng?

hêh poor u guys...living in dorm is awful coz i hate rules  ... well, this monday is yom kippur...i have a day off but DH doesn't...do ya have school 2morrow Diệp??
luckily i dont have to starve myself from sundown today till sundown 2morrow

I do agee with you 'bout the Asian kids. .
My classes are going on well. Actually, my English grade is not so good. I can't understand why some of my friends can get 4.00 GPA. In my school , that's impossible. My teachers are the ones who never know how to write letter A!
Hic... ur teacher is exactly like my teacher when I was in High school. She was a professor in college. But she moved to teach in High school, to work also for her PhD.
Although she is a realy tough grader but I still have to admit that she's one of the best teacher. Even though we worked really hard, there was still no way she's gonna write down that "precious" A.
That's common here, especially in college. There' re always 2 kinds of professors: ones who don't really teach much, but easy graders. The others spend lots of time and energy for their lecture, but as paying back, their exam are like hell, and they're really tough.
I guess it's ok, and we all know who to chose.
I think DH has to be really proud of her school, rite??:D Cos even though U don't get 4.0 but U study much more than anybody else, and when U apply to college, the admissions will look at your records, to check ur school and really, U get a lot more chances.

oh yeah....sometimes it's really really uncomfortable...whenever I want to study, the kids run about...downstairs, then upstairs, scream like crazy , then into my room, borrow my stuffs...oh...luckily for them that they're not my sisters...
I have to stay up late to finish a bunch of homework everyday...
well..watever...my host is pretty good and better than some of my friends' :)

Before I came here the women in my agency gave me a lot ò tips to get a long with host, which belied me about the life with host.
Getting along with host is not so complicated. Maybe as my host are kind.
Hoai Anh,
do you want to tell me what happened to some of your friends?
are they having serious problems with host.
