Garay To Play For Madrid This Season
Ezequiel Garay will play for Real Madrid next season when he returns from the Olympic Games instead of spending an extra season on loan with Racing Santander.
The Argentinian defender was signed by los Merengues at the end of last term for €10m and a deal was put in place that would see him stay at El Sardinero for a further year.
But Bernd Schuster has demanded that the player join up with his squad immediately and Madrid have reached an agreement that will see them pay Racing an extra €1m to break the original arrangement.
With Cristiano Ronaldo dominating the Spanish champions' thoughts, the German coach's request in May to sign two defenders went unheard and he has been unhappy, according to Marca.
Fabio Cannavaro's injury has left the squad short of options in the centre, while Christoph Metzelder has yet to prove himself at the club and Schuster wanted more cover.
Garay is in China preparing to the Olympic Games, but will now report to the Bernabéu when he returns instead of returning to Racing for another season.
Now recovered from the knee injury that prevented him from playing in the final weeks of last season, the 21-year-old is expected to gain Spanish citizenship quickly at Madrid to avoid him oocupying one of the non-European places.
Schuster has aired his discontent about the focus of the club being on just one player this summer, but his complaints have now been heard and he slowly adding to his squad.
Rafael Van der Vaart is expected to complete a move to Madrid next week, while another defender could be on his way in if the coach has his way.
