This book is the rememberance of a girl named Loung Ung whose father was killed by the Angkar soldiers when Polpot was of power in Cambodia.
If you're studying in Mr. Nghiem's class recently, i'll tell u this is the book that he said to be very famous now in America. I am lucky coz i have it in hand.I dont know. Just think, this is a so so good book that you never ever should miss. This is a part that is so touching that i bursted into tears when i read.
Have a look at it and may you find it interesting and read it then.

" They killed my father"

I see a group of people kneeling around a big hole. There are already many dead people in the hole, their bodies sprawled on top of each other. Their black pajama clothes are soaked with blood, urine, feces, and small white matter. The soldiers stand behind the new group of prisoners, casually smoking a cigarette with one hand, while the other holds onto a big hammer with clumps of hair sticking to its head.

A soldier leads another man to the edge of the hole------my heart howls with agony. “It’s Pa! NO!” The soldier pushes on Pa’s shoulders, making him kneel like the others. Tears stream out of my eyes as I whisper thanks to the gods that the soldier has blindfolded Pa. He is spared from having to see the executions of many others. “ Don’t cry, Pa. I know your are afraid,” I want to tell him. I feel his body tense up, hear his heart race, and see tears flowing out from under the blindfold. Pa fights the urge to scream as he hears the sound of a hammer crack the skull next to him, smashing into it. The body falls on top of the others with a thump. The other fathers around Pa cry and beg for mercy but to no avail. One by one, each man is silenced by the hammer. Pa prays silently for the gods to take care of us. He focuses his mind on us, bringing up our faces one by one. He wants our faces to be the last things he sees as the leaves the earth.

“ Oh Pa, I love you. I will always miss you.” My spirit cries and hovers down over him. My spirit wraps invisible arms around him, making him cry even more. “ Pa, I will always love you. I will never let you go.” The soldier walks up to Pa, but I will not let him go. The soldier cannot hear or see me. He cannot see my eyes burn into his soul. “ Leave my Pa alone!” My eyes dare not blink as the soldier raises the hammer above his head. “Pa”, I whisper, “ I have to let you go know, I cannot be here and live.” Tears wash across my body as I fly away, leaving Pa there by himself.

I suppose there's no bookshop in HN selling this book, but you can have a copy of it when we meet.

thanks...actually I am in VN right now. :) Also books are so expensive in the U.S :D I will try to find some used books though.
Btw, I do recommend the book "Vietnam Now" by David Lamb, a very interesting book by an American reporter about not only Vietnam War but the traditions, the uniqueness of Vietnamese culture as well. It is a very useful tool for the ones who are gonna study overseas.

Yup, they pretty expensive, but I mean, in comparison to clothes here, I think they r not that expensive at all. Besides, the life lessons and experiences you gain from them are priceless! :shy: I havent bought new clothes for one whole year, but i gotta have new books, and now reading has become my daily routine, and it also brought me a lot of joy and knowledge. I'm loving it :x If I can find a job, I'm gonna buy hell lot more of books. Books r just amazing!

I havent heard about the book that Hằng said, but I guess its a good book though. :)

I think to ppl who find it interested in books kinda like this, you should also read Cry, the beloved country (Alan Paton), The Grapes of Wrath (John Stein Beck), they all about Civil Wars, ppl struggled with their daily lives to survive, to get justice, to just be human. Those are very compasstionate, profound life lessons. You can gain courage from their courage. And as they said: "Courage is the most important character that you need, because the other ones all depend on it." (I can't even remember who said this :D)
