General introduction.
Hanoi, the 1000-year-old capital of Vietnam, is always appealing to foreigners for its aged history, poetic scene, distinctive architecture of different styles. One of the most attractive beauty spots is the Old Quarter.
The Old Quarter is known as the oldest, densely populated and wealthiest urban area of Hanoi. Visiting the Old Quarter, you will not only understand the residents’ life in a bustle commercial area but also enjoy the old aspects of cultures, lifestyles and architectures. An attractive area with many temples, pagadas, old houses, strange arrangement of housing that you ‘ve never seen. Enjoying the bustle commercial but peaceful and traditional atmosphere is a dispensable part in Hanoi tour.

First, I will talk over some geographic aspects of the Old Quarter. What is traditional called the Old Quarter is actually the neighborhood located between the Red River and the Old Citadel. However, according to historians, we should see the definition of the Old Quarter as the neighborhood including South areas of the Sword Lake called the Semi Quarter or the French Quarter. It was called so by the French to distinguish from the native quarter. It was developed during the Nguyen dynasty by the French. Hanoi at that time ( by 1880s) was the capital of Indochina. So the colonialists built their administrative units there. The Semi Quarter with its French-influenced architectural style was seen by the foreigners as the second small Paris without that many motor cycles

Ten thousand years ago. Hanoi was under the sea.It gradually became a great marsh and finally a river plain with many streams, moats, ditches, lakes. Many alligators and turtles inhabited. That explain why there are huge kind of turtles inhabiting in the water of S Lake. Even 100 years ago, the Swamp condition made the Western to licken Hanoi to Venice. Waterway transportation was prefered and done by rafts or small boats. Gradually, lakes, moats, ditches were filled as the city prospered for the need of living space, and service. Morever, in the colonial period, removing them was considered health measures to avoid mosquitoes.
As you may know, in the late of 10th Century, Vietnam archived a fragile independence from the Chinese rulers. For the early years of its independence, the capital was located at Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh province 100 km away from HN. Because of population pressuresand and King Ly cong uan wanted to be close to his natal village in Bac Ninh province, he moved the capital to Dai La citadel nowadays Hanoi naming it Soaring Dragon.

The capital itself was originally composed of two main areas: the royal citadel and the commercial quarter. The Old Quarter was ideally situated between the Royal Citadel and easy access to waterway transportation of Red River and To Lich River. First of all, it was a large commercial centre with two main trade way: road way is the dike along the Red River and Water way is Ports along Red River. Secondly, it was an industrial center producing goods to support the citadel and export.
