TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Heurelho Gomes - 4.5 - Ludricously ran from his line to bring down Glen Johnson to concede a needless penalty, and remains an untrustworthy presence in between the sticks.

Vedran Corluka - 7.0 - Part of a Tottenham back four that defended staunchly and marshalled the movement of Babel without too much difficulty, while providing service to Lennon whenever possible.

Ledley King - 7.5 - Perennially injured, hardly trains, but Spurs are a different proposition with King in defence. He strolled through the match and marshalled Torres with consummate ease for the entire ninety minutes.

Sebastien Bassong - 8.0 - The new signing from Newcastle slotted into his new side nicely, and his debut was helped by the toothless nature of Liverpool’s attack, allowing him to enjoy a relatively trouble-free debut. Wonderful header put his side back into the lead, capping an excellent all-round display.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto - 7.5 - He may never hit a strike sweeter than his wonder goal that opened the scoring, and also carried out his defensive duties with as little fuss as possible.

Aaron Lennon - 6.5 - Wasn’t involved in the match as much as he would have liked, but is always capable of frightening full-backs and proved to be a useful outlet to drive Spurs into attacking areas.

Tom Huddlestone - 7.0 - Formed a strong partnership with Palacios and used his bulk as well as his unquestionable ability to take control of the midfield. Overran Lucas and Mascherano and ensured that Liverpool could not utilise Steven Gerrard as they would have liked.

Wilston Palacios - 7.5 - The former Wigan man was a formidable presence in the centre of the pitch, and bullied Lucas and Mascherano out of possession for the majority of the match. Tremendous run drew the foul that led to Assou-Ekotto's stunning goal.

Luka Modric - 7.5 - One of the most influential performers on the day, Modric was creative and purposeful and unlocked the Liverpool defence with his attacking guile. Floated in teasing delivery that allowed Bassong to nod home the winner.

Robbie Keane - 5.5 - Missed three clear-cut openings in the first half, and should have netted at least one, particularly his close range header that Reina was equal to. The Irishman will be disappointed not have netted against his former club.

Jermain Defoe - 6.0 - A quiet afternoon for Defoe after his exploits with England in midweek, and his opportnities on goal were limited to a first half header that flew past and a second half snapshot that went over.

Substitutes

Peter Crouch - 5.0 - The tall striker replaced Keane in the second half but was offered little in the way of goalscoring chances.

Jamie O'Hara - N/A

Roman Pavlyuchenko - N/A

LIVERPOOL

Jose Reina - 7.0 - Produced a wonder save to deny Keane from close range, then again moments later, but was helpless to stop Assou-Ekotto’s piledriver flying into his top corner. Made another flying save from Palacios in the second period, but was left exposed by his defenders at Bassong's clincher.

Glen Johnson - 7.0 - The £18m purchase was bought for his attacking ability as much as his defensive qualities, and his marauding run through Spurs' defence prompted Gomes to bring him down and win his side a valuable penalty.

Jamie Carragher - 5.5 - Played with a huge bandage protecting staples in a gash on his head, and seemed affected by the blow as Keane was given time and space in the area on three separate occasions. Let Bassong escape him for the winning goal.

Martin Skrtel - 5.5 - Struggled following clash of heads with partner Carragher, and struggled to keep tabs on the movement of Defoe and Keane afterwards. Eventually had to be replaced due to the knock he received, and it was an afternoon to forget for the Slovakian.

Emiliano Insua - 6.0 - Given the nod at left-back and dealt reasonably well with the threat of Lennon, but his delivery in the final third on his rare forays forward were not of sufficient quality.

Javier Mascherano - 6.5 - An extremely difficult afternoon for the Argentine, who found it tough get the better of Palacios in the centre of the pitch. He could not exert his influence on the match as he would have liked.

Lucas - 5.0 - Given the unenviable role of replacing Xabi Alonso in Liverpool's engine room, and was completely anonymous as the Reds were dominated in central midfield. Offered little as an offensive threat, and could not get the better of the impressive Palacios.

Dirk Kuyt - 5.5 - The Dutchman has warmed to his switch from striker to right winger, but for all his enterprise he struggled to provide any kind of service to Torres, and rarely managed to infiltrate the Spurs back-line.

Steven Gerrard - 6.5 - Not at his vibrant best, although may not be fully fit, but remained the only Liverpool player who appeared dangerous in the final third. Coolly slotted home the penalty that brought his side level, but will be hugely disappointed at an opening day defeat.

Ryan Babel - 5.5 - Surely this must be the season for Babel to come to prominence, but it was another inadequate performance from the Dutchman. Rarely drove at Corluka, who is not a natural full-back, and was unsurprisingly hooked by Benitez just after the hour mark.

Fernando Torres - 6.0 - The Spaniard was starved of service all afternoon, and got little change out of the impressive King and Bassong partnership. Cut a lonely figure as Gerrard dropped deeper to gain possession, and was isolatd by his teammates inability to provide him with any kind of decent chances on goal.

Substitutes

Yossi Benayoun - 5.0 - Looked infinitely more dangerous during his short period on the pitch that Babel, and slipped a superb pass through to Voronin that should have resulted in a penalty being awarded.

Andriy Voronin - 5.0 - May be his last match for Liverpool is reports are to be believed, but was denied a certain penalty kick in the closing stages after he was clearly fouled as he looked to shoot.

Daniel Ayala - N/A

MANCHESTER UNITED

Ben Foster - 7.5 - Was confident in coming for crosses, though rarely tested in terms of shot-stopping until the end, with one superb save from Benitez. A marked improvement on his somewhat ordinary Community Shield showing.

Fabio da Silva - 6.5 - Full of enthusiasm, but lacking in end product offensively and wasn't able to entirely neutralize the threat of McFadden down Birmingham's left in what was still a good performance.

John O'Shea - 6.5 - Had one or two shaky moments at centre-back - a position he hasn't played with any regularity in a long time, and was drafted into playing when Rio Ferdinand was ruled out with more back problems. Was untested for the majority of the match.

Jonny Evans - 7 - Still proving an able deputy to Rio and Vidic, as he proved a calming and composed presence at the back when the Blues charged forward.

Patrice Evra - 8 - Another performance full of energy and determination, that went a long way towards making him tough to beat at the back and increasingly difficult to contain when going forward, also proved the man on the most again, as he did in the Community Shield, clearing a header off the line.

Luis Antonio Valencia - 6.5 - As United fans are finding out, he is very much a winger's winger in every sense. His crosses weren't as dangerous as they could have been, and while he did well to constantly get into remotely threatening goalscoring positions, he was often too hesitant to do anything with them.

Darren Fletcher - 7.5 - Provided regular and efficient defensive assistance, as well as often winning the ball back for his side the moment Birmingham ever got a hold of it. His two blemishes, letting Queudreu in front of him to head on goal, and missing a gilt-edged chance before the break - ended up not costing his side.

Paul Scholes - 7 - A consummate performance of passing accuracy, composure and a cool head. Didn't produce anything particularly special, but assured that United always asked questions of their visitors for the majority of the match.

Nani - 6 - Ended up providing the assist for the only goal of the game in what was otherwise a slightly poor outing that saw him substituted at half-time, possibly with a knock. He had one good effort on goal, and played a smart part in a move that should have provided a second, but otherwise was perhaps too ambitious or anxious and unable to create the danger he should have.

Dimitar Berbatov - 6 - Had the right ideas, and certainly shows promise of forming a deadly partnership with Wayne Rooney, but his execution was off the mark this afternoon. Still, he played an understated yet smart part in the goal.

Wayne Rooney - 8 - Another step in the right direction, as Rooney scored the winner, showing both a degree of aerial prowess followed by striker's instinct, and also provided much of his regular all-round attacking threat: pace, power, passing, movement and one particular volley that almost provided a spectacular second, as well as an incredible touch to put through Michael Owen in the last minute.

Substitutes

Ryan Giggs - 6.5 - Replacing Nani, he kept things simple and the results were satisfactory. Solid, but no inspiration required.

Michael Owen - 5 - Couldn't fault him for his enthusiasm - he took his offside goal well enough - but missed a one-on-one with Joe Hart. Not costly, but he will know it was not good enough, either.

Wes Brown - 5.5 - Caught cold by Christian Benitez and lucky it didn't cost his side. Still rusty.

BIRMINGHAM CITY

Joe Hart - 7.5 - Still looks a promising shot-stopper for the future and will probably contest for the England No. 1 shirt with his opposite number today, Ben Foster. Made some good saves, and was powerless to prevent Rooney's goal.

Steven Carr - 6 - Struggled somewhat against the threat of Evra, though coped better against Nani.

Roger Johnson - 7 - Made some good saving tackles in the first half to keep United at bay. Could be a key player in keeping Birmingham in the Premier League.

Franck Queudrue - 6.5 - Struggled at times with United's interplay and could have perhaps done better with the cross that came in that led to the goal.

Gregory Vignal - 6.5 - Wasn't afraid to concede corners in the name of keeping crosses out of the area. A tidy enough showing.

Sebastian Larsson - 6 - An anonymous performance in which he barely saw enough of the ball to play a memorable part in proceedings, though he produced a couple of good crosses.

Keith Fahey - 6 - Quite a muted showing, though with one particularly good effort on goal that almost caught cold United.

Lee Carsley - 7 - Did a solid enough job assisting the defense, but perhaps will have wished he could have had a greater influence in midfield, though Birmingham were so starved of meaningful possession.

Barry Ferguson - 5.5 - Not the type of game for the Scot to remember, as his side were so often without the ball that he was not able to showcase his talent. Shadowed well by Darren Fletcher.

James McFadden - 7 - A player of understated class who certainly belongs in the Premier League. Always looked a threat on the ball and rarely wasted possession in the final third.

Cameron Jerome - 6.5 - Was in the unenviable position of having to often fashion chances from very little, but came very close to scoring a long-range effort for his side and made things as difficult as he could for United's defense.

Substitutes

Garry O'Connor - 5.5 - Birmingham's first substitute, but very uninvolved in proceedings, as the pressure mounted while United searched for their second.

Christian Benitez - 6 - As he has been known for his career so far; ever energetic, ever threatening, but missing too many chances for his own good. Just the one this afternoon, admittedly well saved by Ben Foster.

Jay O'Shea - n/a.

Sunderland 1-3 Chelsea: Second Half Blitz For The Blues

Chelsea slid easily past Sunderland.Aug 18, 2009 4:40:00 PM

Chelsea made four changes to the side which beat Hull City on the opening weekend: Ricardo Carvalho, Jon Obi Mikel, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka made way for Branislav Ivanovic, Deco, Michael Ballack and Salomon Kalou. Meanwhile, Sunderland were without Steed Malbranque, bringing Jordan Henderson into the starting line-up.

Chelsea made a meal of beating Hull City and went looking for a strong start at the Stadium of Light. However, Darren Bent scored his second in two games since signing from Tottenham Hotspur after 18 minutes to give the Blues a fright.

The forward was in the right place to slot Kenwyne Jones's deflected shot past Petr Cech.

The visitors were guilty of over-egging the pudding in the midfield areas during the first half. They did have a couple of decent chances, including Ballack's shot over the bar from inside the area, but it was otherwise an underwhelming performance until late in the opening period.

Ballack again went close, seeing an effort cleared off the line, before Lee Cattermole blocked from Jose Bosingwa.

Carlo Ancelotti's men went into the dressing room on the back foot, but the Italian gaffer must have passed on some words of wisdom, revitalizing his side and prompting an impressive second half response.

First, Ballack finally etched his name on the scoresheet seven minutes in, following a spell of pressure, when he drove in from eight yards out.

With the hour mark just passed and Chelsea gathering steam, Didier Drogba was dragged to the turf inside the area, allowing Frank Lampard to step up and convert the subsequent penalty.

With twenty minutes remaining the early-season points were just about in the bag. Deco, who of course was so impressive at the beginning of last season before falling out of favor, found the net via the post as he struck for goal powerfully, with very little back-lift.

Despite being deadly at the weekend, Drogba found himself missing a great chance, his downward header bouncing over the bar when he perhaps should have buried the Black Cats.

Interestingly, both newly signed starlet Daniel Sturridge and the previously exiled veteran Andriy Shevchenko came off the bench for a run-out as Ancelotti paraded his attacking depth.

Yet there was to be no more punishment for the hosts, and Chelsea have six points in the bag despite two at-times shaky performances.
