The British Council in Vietnam started its initiative in the field of design a few years ago by organising the product design exhibition ‘Cause and Effect’ in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. We brought over Lucy Swift from Design department to do workshops, and following on from that, recognising the interest in Vietnam for Fashion, we hosted Graduate Fashion week in Vietnam, a catwalk fashion show of the latest design by UK graduates form some of the top universities in the UK. In the same show, we exhibited the work of young Vietnamese fashion graduates alongside that of their UK counterparts. Show producer John Walford accompanied the Graduate Fashion Week show and brought many new ideas in show organisation to the catwalks of Vietnam.

We are continuing our work in fashion now with a series of workshops for Vietnamese students of fashion design at universities in Hanoi and Dong Nai. Dilys Williams, designer with Stella McCartney and Kathleen Hammet, and teacher at the London College of Fashion did 10 days of workshops with students aimed at increasing their skills in portfolio development. Dilys also gave lectures for the teaching staff on curriculum and teaching methods. We are now organising a catwalk show to demonstrate the results of these workshops. For this, we will bring a show producer to Vietnam, to produce the show, which will also feature a display of work made by UK professional organisations in Vietnam for the international market, in order to highlight the close relationship between design and industry.
