1.CHA-NJN:Following a tough four-game road trip, a home matchup with the lowly Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday night may be just what the New Jersey Nets need to snap out of their longest losing streak in two years.
The Nets (5-8) have lost five straight, including all four on their recent road trip. It's their longest skid since dropping nine in a row from Nov. 10-28, 2004.
``A lot of us have been through a lot of streaks, so for the young guys, maybe it can wear on them,'' point guard Jason Kidd said. ``But we're a veteran ballclub. We've lost five in a row, we've got to find a way to turn it around.''
Kidd had 16 assists Sunday, but New Jersey fell 99-93 to the Los Angeles Lakers. Vince Carter led New Jersey with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Nenad Krstic scored 20 points.
The Nets led 48-43 at halftime, but the Lakers outscored them 30-18 in the third quarter. New Jersey rallied, drawing within two on a basket by Krstic late in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers went on a 7-1 run to make it 95-87 with 3+ minutes to play.
New Jersey, which has won the Atlantic Division in four of the last five seasons, is hoping to get back to .500 during what should be an easier stretch of games than the trip through the Western Conference. Following Tuesday's contest against the Bobcats, the Nets take on Boston and Philadelphia, both 5-8 and tied with New Jersey atop the weak Atlantic.
Saturday's matchup with the 76ers also begins a six-game homestand for the Nets. New Jersey is 3-3 at home.
``As fast as you can lose five in a row, you can win, you know, 15,'' Kidd said, ``so we just have to stay together.''
Kidd has been held under 10 points the last four games. He's averaging 10.9 points in seven games against the Bobcats - six of which were wins. That's his lowest points-per-game average against any team, although the seven games are the fewest times he's faced an opponent.
Charlotte (3-10) lost 102-93 to Miami on Saturday, its fourth loss in the last five contests. Adam Morrison tied a season high with 27 points and Gerald Wallace added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats tied the game midway through the third quarter, but trailed by six heading into the fourth.
Morrison was 9-of-20, one of his better shooting games of the season, helping the rookie improve his 39.4 field-goal percentage.
``I know I can play in this league,'' he said. ``I know I can succeed in this league if I do it the right way. Once the shots start falling, I'll feel a lot more comfortable offensively. But I know I belong out there.''
On Monday, Charlotte waived guard Alan Anderson, giving the team an open roster spot. The Bobcats are looking for another point guard to lessen the load on Raymond Felton and Brevin Knight, both of whom are averaging more than 36 minutes per game and are combining for 26.0 points a contest.
Anderson appeared in six of 13 games this season and averaged 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds.
The Bobcats are 1-5 on the road. Their only win in eight games against the Nets was a 91-83 road victory Dec. 14, 2005.
2.HOU-MIN:Six-time All-Star Tracy McGrady has assumed a new role with the Houston Rockets, and the results have been outstanding.
McGrady and the Rockets look to win their fourth straight game when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday at the Toyota Center.
Houston (9-4) has won eight of its last 10 games, and defeated Memphis 85-76 on Saturday behind another stellar game from McGrady, who finished with 19 points and tied his career high with 13 assists.
He's averaging 19 points this season - six below his career points per game - but is also averaging 6.7 assists, more than two per game above his 4.4 career mark.
``It's fun to see your teammates want the ball on the other side,'' McGrady said. ``I take a lot of pride and passion in doing that. I'm trying to make these guys better.''
Yao Ming has benefited most of all from McGrady's passes. The center scored 28 points against the Grizzlies, and is averaging 26.4 points per game - four more than last season.
The Rockets improved to 5-1 at the Toyota Center with Saturday's victory, after being tied with New York, Portland and Toronto for the worst home record last season at 15-26.
They have also won three straight at home, but have dropped their last four meetings in Houston with the Timberwolves (6-7). Minnesota is just 2-5 on the road this season, though, averaging only 88 points in those contests.
The Rockets have also been one of the best defensive teams this year, holding opponents to just 42.8 percent shooting - third-lowest in the league. They held Memphis to 37.7 percent from the field, and Houston's opponents are connecting on just 36 percent of their shots during te Rockets' current three-game win streak.
``When we defend and when we play defense like that, everything else is going to come,'' guard Luther Head said. ``Coach (Jeff Van Gundy) tells us that we're not going to have the best offense all the time and we're not going to make shots all the time, so our defense will keep us in the game.''
The defense has helped put Houston in position to win its 10th game on Tuesday, a total it didn't reach until Dec. 18 of last season in its 23rd game.
The Timberwolves lost to Dallas 93-87 on Monday, ending a three-game winning streak as their second straight comeback bid came up short.
Minnesota rallied from a 15-point deficit to tie the game at 84 with 2:34 remaining, but couldn't take the lead. The Timberwolves had erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday.
``We competed,'' Minnesota coach Dwane Casey said. ``We were consistently trying to get to the basket in the second half. We had three good looks after it was tied, but we couldn't put a shot down. ... We gave ourselves a chance to win. But we're not satisfied with being close.''
Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 12 rebounds against the Mavericks, and has recorded double-doubles in all but two games this season.
Garnett averaged 22 points and 12.3 rebounds in three games against the Rockets last season.
Mike James broke out of a scoreless, 0-for-9 slump over his previous two games with 10 points on Monday. James is averaging 11.3 points this season, and scored 49 points in two games against Houston last season while playing for Toronto.
The Rockets and Minnesota split four meetings last year, with each game decided by six points or fewer.
3.MEM-DEN:The Denver Nuggets have been successful at home recently, and always have been against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Seeking its fifth straight win at the Pepsi Center, the surging Nuggets look to continue their home dominance of the Grizzlies when the teams meet Tuesday night.
Denver (8-4) has won five in a row overall, with four of those wins coming at home. The Nuggets have bounced back after losing their first two games at the Pepsi Center.
``We lost a couple games early, but our goal is to defend our home court to the best of our ability,'' Nuggets forward Joe Smith said. ``We went on the road, got a little bit of unity on that road trip we had. Came back here and we've been rolling ever since.''
Denver will look to win six straight for the first time since Jan. 14-25, when it took seven in a row.
The Nuggets also try for their 18th straight home win over Memphis (3-10), which hasn't won in Denver since a 100-87 victory on Nov. 18, 1997.
The Grizzlies are the only NBA team never to win at the Pepsi Center, and are 2-20 all-time in Denver. They are 0-7 on the road this season, averaging just 88.4 points - nearly 30 fewer than the Nuggets' average during their five-game win streak.
Carmelo Anthony had 33 points and J.R. Smith added 23 to lead Denver to a 103-88 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night.
Playing one of its best all-around games of the season, the NBA's highest-scoring team shot 51 percent and had 27 assists to win for the eighth time in nine games since an 0-3 start. Denver is averaging 110.5 points per game this season.
``We're definitely starting to come together,'' J.R. Smith said. ``As a team, everybody's on the same page. Now we got to go back in the lab and get working on our defense. I love the flow of the offense, I love the team. Whenever I am open my teammates always seem to get me the ball. That's a great thing and they get it back when I get the ball. ... We're definitely confident.''
Anthony went over 30 points for the ninth time in 12 games. He entered this week as the league's leading scorer with 31.1 points per game.
No Memphis player is averaging even half of Anthony's total, in part because star forward Pau Gasol remains sidelined with a broken foot. Chucky Atkins leads the team with 14.9 points per game.
The Grizzlies have alternated wins and losses since their 1-8 start, but are coming off an 85-76 loss at Houston on Saturday night.
Five Memphis players scored in double figures but none had more than Hakim Warrick's 12. The Grizzlies fell to 0-7 against Western Conference teams.
``For us, we've got to play near perfect,'' Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. ``For us to win on the road, we've got to play better for 48 minutes.''
Memphis had lost six in a row to Denver before winning the most recent meeting, 116-102 on March 17 behind Mike Miller's 41 points. Miller has averaged just 11.6 points on 39.6 percent shooting in his last five games overall.
