Since there are tons of debates on this issue going on everyday, I decide to start a discussion here. Don't worry if it violates the "Politics ban" in HAO
Just speak out what you think. (btw, this type of discussion is allowed in VASC so I guess there's nothing wrong with creating one here).
Following are some contradictory arguments of my friends. My school is pretty political aware , I think.
"Everyone speaks of supporting the troops, but how are we really to go about doing that?
it seems to me that "Support the troops" is a phrase used for increasing support for President bush, a tactic to help his campaign for presidency along.
I feel that supporting the troops is protesting the war; bring those soldiers back home so they can be with their families, and end the war." (Bryce Homick)
"lets not totally bash American soldiers risking their lives in Iraq. Lets not also forget what has happened to Americans in Iraq, such as the horrible pictures of 4 contractors dragged through the street of Fallujah." (Alex)
"For one thing, "contractors" in Iraq are not fighting for any shred of nationalistic or patriotic pride. They are just that, contractors, people who have signed a contract that says that if they kill for the United States they will get money. They are also highly compensated for their trouble. On this issue of the solders, many of them may be in the army because of pride in the country. They want to be their though. I do not mean Iraq but the army. They also voluntarily agreed to join the army and therefore agreed to whatever assignment they were given. It might suck but no one was forced to go since they agreed to serve the whimsy of the president. Certainly because of that, supporting our troops will not help and is not warranted. If you all want them to be safer though, get them out of a country they never should have been in, in the first place." (Lew)
