Ý tưởng trung tâm của cái course này là văn hóa Việt Nam dưới góc nhìn của trẻ em, theo hướng inquiry based, tức là chủ yếu gợi được sự tò mò và muốn học hỏi ở trẻ em. Kĩ năng cần phát triển là kĩ năng đặt câu hỏi và phương pháp tìm câu trả lời cho những câu hỏi đó, khuyến khích học sinh tìm câu trả lời từ nhiều nguồn, kể cả online. Nội dung thì tất nhiên là văn hóa Việt Nam, mở rộng tầm hiểu biết về các nền văn hóa khác biệt để tăng empathy của học sinh. Cái khó là yêu cầu sử dụng hands-on approach thay vì text- based. Ngoài ra còn phải đáp ứng được các educational standard của New York State nữa.
To anh Trung: Anh có rất nhiều ý tưởng trùng với em vì em có ý định sử dụng rất nhiều truyện cổ tích nhưng tận dụng như thế nào cho triệt để và làm toát lên được văn hóa Việt Nam từ đó. Anh có cao kiến gì không? Em cũng định dạy chơi chuyền nhưng chắc là lời cũng phải dịch sang tiếng Anh (chính xác hơn chắc là phải invent lời mới) vì em dạy chúng nó bài "Có con chim vành khuyên nhỏ" bằng tiếng Việt, tất cả những gì chúng nó nhớ được là câu "Ừ nhỉ"
BTW, có ai nhớ lời hát của trò chơi chuyền thì post luôn đi. Lâu rồi không chơi, quên sạch mất rồi. Hồi tưởng tuổi thơ tý đi nhỉ.

Mid-Autumn Festival and Halloween: An Exploration of Vietnam’s and America’s Festival for Children
Standard
• ELA: Standard 1: Language for information and understanding
• Social Studies: Standard 2: World History
Purpose: Students will compare two biggest festivals for children respectively in the U.S.A. and Vietnam. Students will be able to show the comparisons they make using a Venn diagram.
• Extra activity: Students are engaged in making Ong Dia masks/ costumes based on Vietnam’s favorite story features.
Materials needed: Halloween vs. Mid-Autumn Festival Venn diagram worksheets, texts on Mid-Autumn festival, computer, projector, blackboard site with pictures and text on Mid-Autumn festival.
Engagement
• Ask the students what they did last Halloween
• Ask students what they like most about Halloween
• Ask students if they know the original meaning of Halloween
• Tell the students that today they are going to learn about a similar festival for children in Vietnam, called the Mid-Autumn festival
• Ask students to imagine what such a festival may be like
Procedures
1. Issue Facts about Mid-Autumn Festival sheets to students, asking them to decide whether the statements is True or False by circling the corresponding letters (T/F)
2. Ask students to share their answers to some of the questions, and explain why they think it’s true or false
3. Ask students to open the text and read about Mid-Autumn Festival (the text will cover the meaning of the Day, special food for the day, and especially special kids’ activities to celebrate the festival)
4. Ask the kids to count how many correct answers they got and ask them to think of the reasons why they made the right/ wrong choices
5. Issue the Venn diagram sheets, explain to students how the diagram works, and ask them to use the information they have read to complete the diagram
Closure
• Ask students after learning about the Mid-Autumn Festival, what more do they want to know about it (either new facts or more detailed facts about what they have learned)
• Tell students we are going to use the blackboard site to find out answers to those questions next time
• Tell students we are going to make masks and costumes for Mid-Autumn Festival next time
• Ask students to think of a Vietnamese story character that they want to dress like, think of what they will need to make such a mask/ costume, and where they can find the supplies.
• Ask students to report to the teacher what they need before the next class so that we can have the right supplies beforehand.
