I kinda mentioned this in an earlier post, but I feel that it is SO important that I might need to say it again. DO RESEARCH on your school's career services. In the US there is a definition of "target schools", i.e. "hot" schools that big companies came to recruit talented young employees. Since you are just about to enter college, this might be a longer-term view, but you will soon see how important it is when you enter your junior (3rd) or even sophomore (2nd) year.
The task of looking for a coveted and high paying job (60K/year) is at least 10 times more challenging and frustrating than applying to college or even grad school, and being in a non-target school doesnt add much to your advantage. The new trend of many young and talented Vietnamese students in the US right now is to be a businessman in Wall Street and offered one of the very few spots of the top firms such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, McKinsey (the acceptance rate is ridiculously low, usually less than 1%). In fact, most of the VNese people I know in class of 07 at top LACs and national unis are going for a career-oriented direction at the moment. This is even more true for entrepreneurial and dynamic Amsers. So unless you ultimately aim for graduate school (even so, there is still extremely high chance that you will change your mind though when you are in the college environment), keep this in mind when you choose your college, so you wouldnt have to regret it later on in your college life.
Too bad I cannot quite provide you with a specific list of target schools for the moment, but the ones I am sure are all the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, Virginia, Duke, Berkeley (hot shot young business men usually spotted at recruting events). Among liberal arts, the hottest are Swarth, Williams, Amherst, Wellesley (corecruited with MIT), Colgate, Barnard, Vassar.

Em hoàn toàn đồng ý với anh Hưng về vấn đề này bởi nếu ai học những trường này thì sẽ có những advantage rất lớn khi đến recruiting season. Cái thứ nhất là bởi vì thường alumni ở các trường này đều gain powerful positions ở các bulge-bracket firms hay các firms họ cũng chẳng có thời gian để tìm xa, họ chỉ cần đến mấy trường này là có thể tìm ra talents rồi. Tuy nhiên, em nghĩ điều này các bạn nhà mình đều có thể phần nào nhận thức được nhưng competition để vào những colleges này đầu tiên cũng đã là khó rồi. Năm ngoái em cũng hiểu điều này nên em cũng chỉ định đi nếu mà có thể vào được các trường hàng đầu(cái list anh Hưng nói) nhưng em nghĩ 1 tấm bằng đại học ở Mĩ là đủ để các bạn thành công ở ngoài mĩ rồi.
To recap: Anh nghĩ các em 04-07 năm nay nên aim cao mấy trường, anh nói chuyện với mấy em mặc dù rất có tiềm năng nhưng phần nào cứ lo sợ. Sợ gì các em. Như anh Hưng nói đấy, được vào các Ivies hay 1 số top LAC là 1 đặc điểm rất lớn.
Cái thứ 2 là các em cũng phải xác định mục đích của mình là gì. Nếu là để làm ở các top WS firms thì học ở các trường ở dưới sẽ khó hơn hẳn, thế nhưng nếu các em có ý định về VN hay ra chỗ nào khác thi 0 cần quá cao.
Đó là anh nghĩ thế để thêm vào một cái issue rất quan trọng mà anh Hưng nêu lên. Chúc các em thành công

That is true. But one of the points that I want to make is that a top school does not usually mean a "target school". For example, I have extremely high regard for a Bowdoin education, but its not a target school (I think), probably same applies for Carleton or Macalester. But being in the same pool as those are "targets" such as Colgate, Davidson and Wellesley. For example, the top 10 banks of the US were on Colgate campus looking for students this semester (given that already a very big chunk of our most talented students was already snatched off after the summer). So keep this well in mind and do careful research.

just to remind you guys, that you'll go home after all. take it in consideration.
by the way, my Pap once told me that when you go home with American diploma, you either go to Harvard (Yale...) or any other school. really big names do have some reputation effects, kinda big ones do not. so if you go for a job in the states, Dartmouth, Wabash or Conncoll would be fine, but if you go home with your recent schools' diploma, they will not help you shine, but your real abilities do.
(in fact schools like Dartmouth, Mt Holyoke, Bryn Mawr... are not well-known in Vietnam. saying you're from Barnard just means you have studies abroad, but people would not know how good the school really is)

Cái mà HLVH nói về "target schools" với "top schools" chắc phải đến năm cuối lúc đi xin việc các cô các chú mới nghiệm ra hết được. Essentially thì "top schools" on the US News ranking aren't always target schools (target schools here being schools that receive recruiting attentions from big corporations and serve as the main supplies for entry-level employees for those companies.) I doubt, for example, that Lehman Brothers or Goldman Sachs would go annually to Wabash to give a presentation, take its students out to dinner and answer their questions as an effort to lure its students into their arms or would they look at Macalester as a main source for their annual hiring needs.
Nếu như các cô chú muốn top-notch jobs upon graduation, not being at a target school can be a big setback. You will have to work harder/a lot harder than your peers at a target school to get a foot in the door of the big names.
But that's for years from now. You guys still have a bit of time to figure it out.

@ Nga: Em nhầm, kiếm việc ngon ở các công ty lớn là 1 chuyện còn có thể survive ở trong environment đấy không lại là 1 chuyện hoàn toàn khác. Hours làm ở đây rất khủng khiếp và môi trường cực kì competitive Chuyển vè châu á hours tốt hơn mà tax lại không nhiều bẳng ở mĩ, lại còn ý kiến của mình được value hơn nữa. Nếu những người nào làm lâu năn hay để ý mọi thứ 1 tí thì sẽ thấy đất mĩ chưa chắc là nơi đất lành cho dân chúng ta. Cái này là anh nghe qua kinh nghiệm của chú anh, từng làm ở Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley(2 firms lớn nhất ở Mĩ), và hiện đang rất enjoy cuộc sống ở singapore-->lương khá hơn và cuộc sống tinh thần cũng ổn hơn nữa.

huyện đi làm ý, em quan sát thấy là như thế. lý do ở lại có 3 loại: ngắn hạn: 1. trả nợ 2. tích lũy kinh nghiệm. thường ở lại khoảng 1 đến 3,4 năm. loại dài hạn: 3. không quen được với cuộc sống và xã hội Việt Nam. không thiếu những kẻ vừa sang đã ngoạc mồm "chắc chắn là ở lại chứ không về."
nếu ai cũng nghĩ được những mặt trái của việc ở lại thì họ có ở lại không?

1. I think the seniors' advice is to take career orientation, and hence career services at your target schools, into account during the application process. However, it does not mean that you apply to so-called "target" schools only. After all, each school, Ivy or LAC, accepts 1 to 3 Vnese kids only. Your TOP priority now is to get admission & finaid. I think the goal now is not to avoid "popular schools" but to find schools that best fit your qualifications and personality. Then apply to as many "fit" schools as possible to maximize your chance. When you have three finaid offers on the table, then you can check out for career services, graduate school services or whatever.
2. Do not take a good career in VN for granted (unless you have amazing contacts). A few years from now, a good number of Vnese graduates from Ivies and LACs, including some of us on this board, will likely go back and hold key positions in Asia/Vietnam. Top expats in VN also know a lot about schools and firms in the US. For example, there are 3 US graduates (me from Bates, one from UC Berkeley, one from NYU) in my 5 person team last summer. That means the competition to get top positions is going to be intense. Seriously, at top firms, you will be amazed about how much your future boss would be knowledgeable about your school, your work experience and other accomplishments. Of course, random workers or farmers won't probably know any schools in the US except for Harvard. But why would you want them to know your school any way?
3. In terms of salary, there is a huge premium for overseas grads due to *serious* dearth of talents in VN. To illustrate what Hung and Nam Anh said above, some top firms offer *fresh* overseas grads with starting salary of $1000-$1500, more than three times of the financial services industry in VN ($250-$500) and ten times of the average Vnese graduate ($100-$150). This is impossible to see in the west.
