In a survey of the nicest U.S. cities conducted by America Online and
Travel & Leisure magazine survey, Honolulu ranked first in the nation,
placing in the top five on most of the seven categories by which cities
were ranked.
The results were posted on AOL's home page Monday. AOL is the world's
largest Internet service provider and the good news about Honolulu will
be
seen by at least 10 million people.
More than 500,000 people responded in the self-selected survey on
America
Online from August through October, which 25 cities were offered as
rankings choices.
The individual ranking categories are described below.
The Basics Honolulu ranked first overall, above San Diego, Portland,
Austin and Denver.
Weather: Honolulu not only ranked first on climate, ahead of San
Diego,
San Juan, Miami and Los Angeles, but got one of the highest numerical
rankings of any city in any category here. Peacefulness: Honolulu
topped
this list, too, ahead of Portland, the Twin Cities, San Diego and
Austin.
Ease of Finding Your Way Around: Honolulu placed second after Las Vegas
and ahead of Phoenix, Portland and San Diego. Cleanliness: Honolulu
placed
third after Portland and the Twin Cities, and ahead of San Diego and
Orlando. Proximity to Nature: Portland and Denver got higher scores
than
Honolulu, which came in above Seattle and the Twin Cities.
Attractiveness:
Honolulu placed third after San Francisco and Washington, D.C., and
ahead
of San Diego and Chicago. Interesting Neighborhoods: Honolulu came in
eleventh on this list, which gave top honors to San Francisco, New
York,
New Orleans, Boston and Seattle. Activities Honolulu placed fifth in
this
category, after New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston.
Subcategories
including shopping, dining out, people watching, outdoor exercise,
visiting historical sites, the club scene, and cultural events.
Honolulu
managed to close in the top five despite making only one of the
individual
top fives, placing third for outdoor exercise after San Diego and
Denver.
Holidays and Seasons Honolulu came in second after San Diego. Of 10
subcategories ranging from St. Patrick's Day to Thanksgiving, Honolulu
placed first for Valentine's Day and for Winter, and made the top five
for
Spring, Summer and New Year's. For some reason the city came in only
sixth
for Fall.
People Honolulu was first, ahead of Nashville, San Antonio, Austin and
the Twin Cities. Honolulu led the nation for people who are
knowledgeable
about their city (New Orleans was second), and for people who are
helpful
in giving directions (Nashville was second) and placed second in the
three
other subcategories, city pride (after New York), friendly (after
Nashville) and good-looking (after San Diego.)
Romance Honolulu placed second, after San Juan, and came in first for
romantic getaways and honeymoons or anniversaries. For steamy
encounters
Honolulu came in fourth after New Oeleans, Miami and San Juan, while
for
meeting someone new it placed comparatively low, 25th, while such
cities
as New York and Miami were tops.
Safety Honolulu placed second to Portland on this list, also coming in
second to Portland on public transportation, and second to Orlando on
safety at monuments and major attractions. For safety in crowded
streets
Honolulu was fourth after Portland, the Twin Cities and San Diego,
while
on quiet streets Portland won and Honolulu was sixth.
Value Honolulu was tenth on this ranking, brought down by a low
ranking
on shopping bargains, while coming in the bottom half of the top 10 on
cultural events, hotels, attractions and restaurants.
