American English Summer Academy,
A Joint Project of Duke University, Hanoi University Faculty of International Studies,& Institute of International Education
Purpose: To provide an American language immersion experience for Hanoi high school students hoping to study in the United States
Program: The program will take place between June 16 and July 3rd from 8:30-12, Mondays-Thursdays with some afternoon field trips and activities. Students will study American English with native speaking faculty and students from Duke University and advanced FIS students from Hanoi University.
Students will be prepared for key English examinations for study abroad including:
SAT reading and writing
TOEFL listening and speaking
(The class will be supervised by Lucy Haagen, former Associate Director of ETS so you will have the unique opportunity to learn firsthand tips from the one who has written SAT and TOEFL)
The program will be interactive, with a focus on learning to speak idiomatically, fluently, and with natural and accurate articulation. Students will also learn to write the kind of creative essays that are expected in America.
Requirements:
The program is open to students who have completed 10th or 11th grade in Hanoi. They must commit to attending all of the classes and doing nightly assignments from June 16 to July 3. There is no tuition fee for the program and students will be given study materials at no charge. But students will be expected to make a contribution of children’s books, clothes, or other useful items and perform 8 hours of volunteer service. These contributions will support an educational camp for minority children in villages in Ha Tay Province.
