DAVID OISTRAKH
Biography (1908 - 1974)
David Fedorovich Oistrakh was born in Odessa on 30 September 1908. From the age of five he studied violin with Pyotr Stolyarsky until he graduated in violin and viola from the Odessa Conservatory in 1926. He played with the Odessa Symphony Orchestra as leader and as soloist. In 1927, Glazunov asked him to Kiev to play his violin concerto under him.
His debut in Leningrad came in 1928. That same year he moved to Moscow and made his debut there in 1929. During the 1930's he won many major prizes: first prize in the Ukrainian Contest (1930) and also first prize in the All-Soviet Contest (1935); second prize in the Wieniawski Contest (1935 - the first prize was won by Ginette Neveu); first prize in the Ysaye Concours in Brussels in 1937. This was the start of his international career. However, during the Second World War he played at the front lines, in beseiged Leningrad, and also in hospitals and factories. He gave a performance of Bach's Double Concerto in 1945 in Moscow with Yehudi Menuhin, who was the first foreign artist to visit the Soviet Union after the war. In 1946 and 1947, Oistrakh performed a cycle of 5 programmes, which he named 'the Development of the Violin Concerto'. The cycle included the concertos by Sibelius, Elgar and Walton, and Khachaturian's Violin Concerto, which was dedicated to Oistrakh. Shostakovich also wrote his 1st Violin Concerto for Oistrakh, which he performed at his New York debut in 1955.
Oistrakh was one of the greatest violinists of his day, and was the most characteristic representative of the Russian school, although his training took place in Odessa. He developed his monumental style during his time in Moscow. He combined supreme technical mastery and musicianship, delivered with a warm and powerful tone. He was very happy to perform new works, and many Soviet composers dedicated works to him (Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Myaskovsky, Khachaturian, Rakov, Vainberg). He also played sonatas with Lev Oborin and trios with Oborin and Knushevitsky, and was also a talented conductor. He was a teacher at the Moscow Conservatory from 1934, and among his students were his son Igor, Valery Klimov and Gidon Kremer. He was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1954 and was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1960. He was also awarded honours by the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Conservatorio di Saint Cecilia in Rome. His hobby was chess and he played a famous match against Prokofiev in 1937.
